What it is for
An ornamental pool is built to be looked at, not swum in. In a garden, at a building entrance or on a terrace it produces a water surface, movement and reflection.
Shallow and wide
It is usually kept shallow. If you want the surface to work like a mirror, what matters is not depth but the stillness of the surface and the edge detail. A spill edge makes the water read as one uninterrupted plane.
Jets and lighting
Vertical jets, a row of fountains or a plain surface — whichever it is, pump and nozzle selection sets the height of the water. Underwater lighting changes the evening appearance completely, so the electrical work is planned at the design stage.
Keeping the water clean
An ornamental pool also needs circulation and filtration. Water left standing turns green quickly and starts to smell; a small volume does not mean maintenance is unnecessary.
Winter
The risk of freezing is high in shallow pools. The water has to be drained before winter, or the system put into its winter mode.
